Building an Automotive On-Board Charger

On-board chargers (OBCs) are just one piece of the EV puzzle. Traditional combustion vehicles are seeing electronic upgrades across the board, including motors, sound, sensors, braking, compressors, and charging/battery management. In fact, most non-EV cars today have as many as 40 motors, some more than 100 depending on luxury class. As more cars shift in the direction of fully electric, there’s been focus on how to build and optimize the charging path (AC/DC) as well as the on-board DC/DC conversion for downstream electronics. This technical article explores the technologies, including Silicon Carbide, being integrated to make OBCs more economical and compact.
